The candidates to be next GM/President of the Leafs

I was thinking about posting a poll with all the candidates, but then I realized I might not know all the candidates. And it would be just like the Leafs to hire someone who I didn't include in the poll.

These (minus Burke) are the names I can recall reading:

Neil Smith
Craig Button
Doug Armstrong
Jim Nill
Ken Holland
Jim Rutherford
Steve Tambellini

Colin Cambell is another named consistantly tossed about.

I'd love Jim Nill from Detroit or Armstrong previously of Dallas (who are thriving off of his team). However, once again Peddie has painted himself into a corner. He came out and said we'd have a new GM by training camp and also, this GM would be a veteran star GM.

I truly have no clue who the Leafs are after or how Peddie is going to handle this whole search. It is another cluster**** thanks to Dick Peddie.

Hopefully the research that Kirke did allows an expedient interview process. I want someone in place for the draft. Doubt it'll happen, but I can dream.

Doug Wilson of the Sharks is not a candidate.

Maple Leafs contact Sharks about GM Wilson

Sources tell TSN the Maple Leafs contacted the San Jose Sharks yesterday for permission to talk to Sharks' GM Doug Wilson.

But sources say Sharks' ownership refused to grant that permission, so scratch Wilson as a candidate for the Leaf job.

“Wilson doesn't really want to leave San Jose and the Sharks don't want him to leave,” the source said. “It's as simple as that.”

It won't be Nill or Holland either.

The Globe and Mail reports Red Wings senior vice-president Jim Devellano said they will not grant the Maple Leafs permission to speak to Detroit GM Ken Holland or assistant GM Jim Nill.

The newspaper also reports that several weeks ago Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment chairman Larry Tanenbaum visited Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch to inquire about the possibility of hiring Holland and/or Nill but was rebuffed on both counts.

"Larry was told then, and I've run into (MLSE president) Richard Peddie a couple of times since and reiterated, that they are under contract for three more years," Devellano told the Globe. "It doesn't matter how many times I tell members of the Toronto media that Ken Holland and Jim Nill are not coming to Toronto, they still are mentioned as possibilities or candidates. I'm telling you that is not the case."

Rutherford is your best option. Although he might own a small piece of the Canes, he will be easily able to sell it. Neil Smith should be considered and at the top of that list.

I want nothing to do with Rutherford. He is an awful GM.

Neil Smith is a guy I have always liked. I know he was on the short list to be the GM of the Leafs in 03 but they went with JFJ instead. In his short time with the Isles last year he did a lot of good things for them which helped them get into the playoffs that year.

I am not a fan of Dave Nonis.

Maple Leafs set to meet with former Stars general manager

A day after being shut down by yet another team in their quest to rebuild management, TSN has learned that the Toronto Maple Leafs have made contact with former Dallas Stars general manager Doug Armstrong.

Armstrong was contacted last week and is expected to meet with Toronto's brass sometime this week.
