Euros Expand to 24
Jun 28, 2008 - 4:55 PM - by davemess
Quote:
The European Championships look certain to be expanded from 16 to 24 teams after the proposal today won universal support from Uefa's 53 member countries.

A final decision will be taken by Uefa's executive committee in September but there was no opposition to the plan when it was raised at a meeting of association presidents and general secretaries in Vienna today.

The change would come into force for Euro 2016 and was originally put forward by the Scottish FA last year. Their chief executive Gordon Smith said he was delighted by the response. "It's something Uefa has seen no real disadvantage to - it will only means a few extra days of the tournament and there is no down side in terms of loss of revenue.
Football: European Championships set to increase to 24 teams for 2016 | Football | guardian.co.uk

Sensible move, with the strength in depth of the European field these days its tough to have good teams sitting home because of impossible Qualification Draws.

Huge Day In Sports (Football)
Jul 01, 2008 - 11:22 AM - by SteeleRED
Today is one of my favorite day's in all of professional sports, as the free agency period begins in the NHL and NBA, and the international transfer window opens in football.

Will my team be a big player in the market? Liverpool has been linked to Gareth Barry, David Bentley and now the latest rumour, Robbie Keane. Whether any of those additions (in addition to the guys already inked, Philipp Degen and Andrea Dossena, as well as Scott Carson's return from his loan spells) happens remains to be seen.

Also, we've lost John Arne Riise, Andriy Voronin and Charles Itandje, and may lose Xabi Alonso, Peter Crouch, Harry Kewell, Yossi Benayoun, Jermaine Pennant and Steve Finnan.

But of the possibilities for all of my teams, LFC seems to have the greatest options open to them. I can't wait!

Barton Jailed
May 20, 2008 - 11:43 AM - by davemess
Quote:
Premier League footballer Joey Barton has been jailed for assault and affray.

Barton, 25, was captured on CCTV in Liverpool on 27 December 2007 punching one man 20 times before an attack which left a teenage boy with broken teeth.

The Newcastle and England midfielder, from Widnes, admitted the charges last month but reporting restrictions were only lifted on Tuesday.

Sentencing him to six months in jail, Judge Henry Globe QC said it was a "violent and cowardly act".
