5. What is the Penalty Box?
The Penalty Box (which was hosted at ncpen.net) was one of the first (and most popular) Hurricanes fanboards in existence (and, in the early days of the team’s existence in North Carolina, a festering Hartford-Carolina battleground). Quite a few of the posters on this board came from there after its demise late in 2004, when Ron (the owner) was recalled to active duty by the US Navy.
6. Who is Lindsay Berra?
Lindsay Berra is a writer for ESPN the Magazine. She wrote an article that was less-than flattering to the ‘Canes, had quite a few errors in it, and was ripped to shreds by the locals in mb3.scout.com/fcarolinaca...opicID=208 this thread here. Lindsay got in on the action at one point in the thread, and chaos ensued. (BTW, the article that caused all the ruckus is ESPN.com: NHL - Offseason Spotlight: Carolina Hurricanes and most of the glaring errors were corrected).
7. What’s up with the posting of the on-ice officials before every game?
It started in October 2001. HurricaneCamille posted the list of who the referees were to be for the Hurricanes’ season opener. The Hurricanes won, so she did the same thing for the next game (which the Hurricanes also won). The Hurricanes won again, and a tradition was born—complete with silly plays on the names of one or more of the officials. The official Keeper of the Refs Thread is now PacknCanes26.
8. What will the attendance be for $upcoming_game?
We don’t know.
9. Who will be the goalie for $upcoming_game?
Only the Shadow knows.
10. What is the genesis of the IAM.CANIAC slogan?
Credit for the original slogan and graphic (IAM.CA) goes to Molson Breweries and their "I Am Canadian" ad campaign, which was wildly successful north of 49 (and enjoyed moderate success here in the States thanks to the wonder that is the Internet). The Caniac version was created by daspin (a poster from the Canadiens board and one of the moderators of fanhome's NHL board), a graphic designer (and Canadiens fan) living in Toronto who was adopted by the denizens of the 'Canes board after the second round of the 2002 playoffs. The graphic that daspin created for the 'Canes fans made it onto fan-created signs and t-shirts.
11. Who is JDBeans?
JDBeans is a legend in his own mind (THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE!), a Bruins fan who trolls even the Bruins board with incredibly annoying nonsense about how great the Bruins (WICKED PISSAH TEAM! BEST IN HOCKEY!) are and all kinds of lame brags about how great a guy he is (EVERYBODY LOVES BEANS). Loves to post in the third person and include inane parenthetical comments all in caps. Amusing to some, but annoying as CS violation removed to everyone else. Included in this FAQ only by request.
12. Who is the bleach blonde guy on the jumbotron that shouts "That's a Carolina Hurricanes goal! WOOOOOOO"?
That would be WWE legend (and NC resident) Ric Flair, who is a hockey fan and supporter of the Hurricanes and other NC sports teams. The jumbotron clips were recorded at the request of (or, depending on who you talk to, as a favor to) Tony Gilliam, a former WCW ring announcer who was the Hurricanes' public address announcer for their first five seasons in Raleigh.
13. Why does ESPN keep dissing this team/referring to it as "the Hartford/Carolina franchise", "the former Hartford Whalers", et al.?
It has nothing to do with the move. I repeat: IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MOVE. ESPN's garbage is nothing new, and has been going on for 24 years and counting now.
Back in 1981, then-owner Howard Baldwin got in a fight with the founders and high-ups at ESPN, and took the Whalers' TV contract to SportsChannel America--a move which almost killed ESPN (which at the time was struggling financially). Those who are still with the Extra-Sucky Poker Network have not forgotten about this, and for the last 25 years have been "getting even" by taking potshots at the team every chance they get.
Referenced (most recently--and quite eloquently) here: mb3.scout.com/fcarolinaca...5667.topic
14. Did the Hurricanes really ask the NHL to move back the start time of one of their games for a NASCAR race?
NO.
The Carolina Hurricanes have never, in their history, asked the NHL to move back the start time of one of their games to accomodate NASCAR. The Toronto Maple Leafs, on the other hand, are another matter entirely.
15. Why are some people on this board always so negative?! And why am I being told off for scolding the negative-thinking people that are saying we're going to lose $GAME?! Why is dwind always saying stuff about $GAME and $TEAM?! If you're a REAL fan, you will always be positive about your team!!!
One or two regulars on the board will, in each game day thread, declare the Hurricanes the losers before the game starts; this declaration is generally accompanied by completely outlandish predictions about what will happen in the game, the state of the team before during and after, the phase of the moon, and the price of tea in China. Leave them alone, it's a game-day ritual that has resulted in far more wins than losses (not to mention a lot of entertainment for the rest of the board)--and if you get a steel-toed boot to the head for hailing on somebody for "being negative" in the game thread, suck it up and don't whine. That's a game-day ritual, too. This goes double for the playoffs. It's serious business. We're not kidding. The Forms Must Be Obeyed.
16. Who or what is Pierre McPlankton?
That would be NBC/TSN/Sports Illustrated gadfly Pierre McGuire, owing to his strong resemblance to Plankton on Sponge Bob, Square Pants. Despite being employed as a scout, assistant coach and head coach of the Hartford Whalers (or maybe because of it), he's never had a kind word for the Canes. Despite his Canadian-centric job and views, he was born in Englewood, NJ.
17. What is the difference between a game of consequence, mega huge game, must win game and pivotal global event?
That would be defined thusly, by Vinniebagadonuts in this post.
1) Preseason games are to be mostly ignored.
2) Any game with two points on the line is a "game of consequence."
3) A game of consequence played between two teams fighting for the same playoff spot in the last third of the season is a "mega-huge game."
4) "Must-win games" are games -- generally in the last week or two of the season -- when a team will see it's odds to make the post-season shrink to under 1%.
5) Games at the conference final or Stanley Cup Final are "pivotal global events."
