    Hurricanes Board FAQ

    Fanhome/Scout/The Scoreboard Hurricanes board FAQ

This Frequently-Asked Questions (FAQ) list is posted (and stickied and updated) for the benefit of visitors, new posters, and any other interested parties. Its purpose is to help newcomers and visitors to the board become acquainted with the way things work around here.

The FAQ is divided into the following sections (so far):

    1) Rogues' Gallery
the moderators, moderators emeritus, and other notable folks.
    1a) Honor Roll
Opposing team fans who have distinguished themselves with their sportsmanship and all-around "coolness"

    2) In-Jokes, board traditions, and general information
Or, “Who the [polar’s word] is Tripp Tracy and why the CS violation removed is he OVER HERE pissing on Chopper Harrison’s shoes while we talk about who the refs will be tomorrow night?”

    3) Links
Additions, corrections, gripes, etc. may be sent to acidqueen (at) streetneeds (dot) com.

    Rogues' Gallery

    1. Moderators
    puckinA: Moderator since early 2005.
    andyt: Moderator since early 2008.

    2. Moderators Emeritus
GreensboroHurricanes: The guy that brought us all together in the first place and effectively founded the Hurricanes community on Fanhome. First moderator of the board, now retired from moderatin’. Served from 1999-2003.
jeffbear: Longtime poster, one of the first to post on Fanhome back in the days when it was hockeyboards.com. Came on board as a moderator in 2001 to back up GreensboroHurricanes, is now a community moderator.
PerfectStormHits: Another longtime poster, from right around the time that hockeyboards.com became Fanhome.com. Served from 2003-2005.
NoMich: Another longtime poster. Served until 2008.

    3. Notable posters (including those residing outside of North America)
RonnieFranchise: Wise grandmaster of Whalercanes fandom who came to us after the Penalty Box message board at ncpen.net faded away. Noted for (among other things) his insights on the history of the team and the NHL in general. Missing In Action since 2007.
Whaler2: Maintainer of the team stats (and he does a damn fine job of it, too).
PlayerCoachReggieDunlop: Poster who started the infamous “pissing on my shoes” thread. Missing In Action since 2004.
sloeberken: Belgian fan who has been following the Hurricanes since the Hartford days. Named his son for then-Hurricane Byron Ritchie (now playing in Calgary with the Flames), stays up late to listen to ChuckandtheletterK over the Internet.
Christer: One of two Swedish fans on the board. Provides insight on the team's one Swedish player, and kept the board informed on the SEL performances of Niclas Wallin, Justin Williams, and Martin Gerber during the Lockout.
Swede16: Brother of former Hurricane Tommy Westlund (now retired). Still pops in from time to time to say hi and let us know how his brother is doing.
lin: One of two Dutch representatives on the board. Likes to occasionally chat about Dutch soccer with svandijk (the other Dutch poster on the board, althouh he lives in the US ).
JamesNorthern: Hurricanes fan since the Hartford days. Originally from Montreal, currently working (and spreading the word about the Hurricanes) in France. As of 8/09, relocated to Berlin.
FayettenamCanesFan: Formerly in the part-time employ of the Hurricanes, currently working as a civilian contractor in Iraq. Comes by every now and then to chat and let us know that he's still alive and well.
JudgeWapner: Ambassador of the Caniac Nation to the Sovereign Republic of Alberta (they've got oil and they've got guns--don't mess with them). Has a special hate-on for the Montreal Canadiens. Habs fans would do well to just chuckle and not get their pantalettes in a wad over him, because it's the Judge and it's what he does. Just sayin'.
    HurricaneCamille: FAQ Beeyatch. Mostly harmless.

    4. Honor Roll
    Leafs fans:
    Hockeylover

    Canadiens fans:
    daspin
    Habsy

    Oilers fans:
    burntorange89017
    PeArD

(FAQ Beeyatch request: I'm accepting nominations for fans of other teams that frequent this board (and who the Caniacs on this board feel are worthy of receiving props in the FAQ.))

In-Jokes, arcane references, board traditions, and other stuff

    1. Why are the moderators censoring all these posts with CS violation removed?
CS violation removed is a relic from the early days of Fanhome. When a moderator would edit a post to remove profanity or some other such thing that violated the Community Standards (CS), CS violation removed would be inserted in its place. Sometime around 2002 (before the shift from vBulletin to ezboards), a poster on the board started using the phrase to save the moderators the trouble of having to edit her posts. It has since become a poster-inserted way of expressing something that would violate the CS without actually violating the CS.

    2. What is [polar’s word]?
    Short answer: CS violation removed.
Longer answer: polarbare once (after the Hurricanes stunk it up against the Buffalo Sabres in January 2004) managed to get a profane synonym for the act of sexual congress past the board’s censorbots by leaving a letter off the end. Neither polarbare nor the mods caught it until after several posters had commented, most notably toastmasterbone--whose comment was:
"I just hope that the roads are safe for all of our brethren coming home from that (polar's word) game where we (polar's word) gave the (polar's word) thing away. Jeez-O-(polar's word)-flip."
(thread in question is here: mb3.scout.com/fcarolinaca...=379.topic )

    3. Who is Chopper Harrison?
Chopper Harrison was once the morning drive guy at 96Rock, and is a Hurricanes season ticket holder. Despite a laudable effort to get the team lots of publicity on his show when he was on the air, he is generally derided by most of the fanbase for being an overbearing loutish sycophant. When he was in the employ of the Curtis Media Group (the owners of 96Rock), Chopper was often the guy who did the intermission “entertainment” at home games. Known by those fans who never listened to 96Rock as the loud guy with the bad mullet who used to burst eardrums by hollering “OVER HERE!” into the mic while pointing at sections that he thought the Storm Squad should launch t-shirts in the general direction of.

    4. Who is Tripp Tracy?
Tripp Tracy is the Hurricanes’ TV color analyst and former goaltender. Former 9th round draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers. Noted in the Hurricanes fanbase for saying a lot of very off-the-wall things and possibly being more nutty than most color guys in the NHL (not that there's anything wrong with that). Tends to fixate on one thing and do it to death--in 02-03 and 03-04 it was food, in 05-06 it was groins. Like him or loathe him, you can’t ignore him. (Ed. note from jeffbear: Tracy is also the best known example of why assuming that a guy is smart just because he holds a degree from Harvard can get you into DEEP trouble.)

4a. Why is everybody pissing on everyone else's shoes?
"Pissing on my shoes" came from mb3.scout.com/fcarolinaca...opicID=276
a thread by PlayerCoachReggieDunlop in November of 2003. The actual source of the comment is this post in the thread by NoMich:
"I'm with DCrews on this one. Good grief people, it was just an amusing observation from Reg's night on the town last night. However, I do think that if I ever post something like this, I will mention that the person pissed on my shoes. Whether they actually did it or not is of no relevance; it makes the anectdote much more funny.

"I was about town last night, painting it a rather deep shade of red, when I happened upon Misters Vasicek and Svoboda. Nice geezers, them, until Jaro pissed on my shoes." See? Humor."

    4b. What is a stagnut?
Stagnut came from this post . The entire topic was regarding the ESPN pre-season power rankings that showed the Canes at #23. He meant to use "stagnant" but typed "stagnut" instead. It can be used in almost any situation for any reason. "Get your hot-roasted stagnuts." "Those refs blew stagnuts last night."

4c. What the [polar's word] is a "meatloaf dispute"
Meatloaf dispute came from this post. The thread itself is very somber, about UNC-CH student body President Eve Carson who was senselessly murdered. The thread moved into a discussion about gun control and locking up guns. Vinniebagadonuts said that a the owner of a locked up gun is more likely to be use it in a meatloaf dispute with grandma than defend your home. HeyKurtz took it upon himself to get it added to the FAQ lexicon and the moderator was fighting a losing battle and reluctantly agreed.

    5. What is the Penalty Box?
The Penalty Box (which was hosted at ncpen.net) was one of the first (and most popular) Hurricanes fanboards in existence (and, in the early days of the team’s existence in North Carolina, a festering Hartford-Carolina battleground). Quite a few of the posters on this board came from there after its demise late in 2004, when Ron (the owner) was recalled to active duty by the US Navy.

    6. Who is Lindsay Berra?
Lindsay Berra is a writer for ESPN the Magazine. She wrote an article that was less-than flattering to the ‘Canes, had quite a few errors in it, and was ripped to shreds by the locals in mb3.scout.com/fcarolinaca...opicID=208 this thread here. Lindsay got in on the action at one point in the thread, and chaos ensued. (BTW, the article that caused all the ruckus is ESPN.com: NHL - Offseason Spotlight: Carolina Hurricanes and most of the glaring errors were corrected).

    7. What’s up with the posting of the on-ice officials before every game?
It started in October 2001. HurricaneCamille posted the list of who the referees were to be for the Hurricanes’ season opener. The Hurricanes won, so she did the same thing for the next game (which the Hurricanes also won). The Hurricanes won again, and a tradition was born—complete with silly plays on the names of one or more of the officials. The official Keeper of the Refs Thread is now PacknCanes26.

    8. What will the attendance be for $upcoming_game?
    We don’t know.

    9. Who will be the goalie for $upcoming_game?
    Only the Shadow knows.

    10. What is the genesis of the IAM.CANIAC slogan?
Credit for the original slogan and graphic (IAM.CA) goes to Molson Breweries and their "I Am Canadian" ad campaign, which was wildly successful north of 49 (and enjoyed moderate success here in the States thanks to the wonder that is the Internet). The Caniac version was created by daspin (a poster from the Canadiens board and one of the moderators of fanhome's NHL board), a graphic designer (and Canadiens fan) living in Toronto who was adopted by the denizens of the 'Canes board after the second round of the 2002 playoffs. The graphic that daspin created for the 'Canes fans made it onto fan-created signs and t-shirts.

    11. Who is JDBeans?
JDBeans is a legend in his own mind (THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE!), a Bruins fan who trolls even the Bruins board with incredibly annoying nonsense about how great the Bruins (WICKED PISSAH TEAM! BEST IN HOCKEY!) are and all kinds of lame brags about how great a guy he is (EVERYBODY LOVES BEANS). Loves to post in the third person and include inane parenthetical comments all in caps. Amusing to some, but annoying as CS violation removed to everyone else. Included in this FAQ only by request.

    12. Who is the bleach blonde guy on the jumbotron that shouts "That's a Carolina Hurricanes goal! WOOOOOOO"?
That would be WWE legend (and NC resident) Ric Flair, who is a hockey fan and supporter of the Hurricanes and other NC sports teams. The jumbotron clips were recorded at the request of (or, depending on who you talk to, as a favor to) Tony Gilliam, a former WCW ring announcer who was the Hurricanes' public address announcer for their first five seasons in Raleigh.

    13. Why does ESPN keep dissing this team/referring to it as "the Hartford/Carolina franchise", "the former Hartford Whalers", et al.?
It has nothing to do with the move. I repeat: IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MOVE. ESPN's garbage is nothing new, and has been going on for 24 years and counting now.
Back in 1981, then-owner Howard Baldwin got in a fight with the founders and high-ups at ESPN, and took the Whalers' TV contract to SportsChannel America--a move which almost killed ESPN (which at the time was struggling financially). Those who are still with the Extra-Sucky Poker Network have not forgotten about this, and for the last 25 years have been "getting even" by taking potshots at the team every chance they get.
Referenced (most recently--and quite eloquently) here: mb3.scout.com/fcarolinaca...5667.topic

    14. Did the Hurricanes really ask the NHL to move back the start time of one of their games for a NASCAR race?
    NO.
The Carolina Hurricanes have never, in their history, asked the NHL to move back the start time of one of their games to accomodate NASCAR. The Toronto Maple Leafs, on the other hand, are another matter entirely.

    15. Why are some people on this board always so negative?! And why am I being told off for scolding the negative-thinking people that are saying we're going to lose $GAME?! Why is dwind always saying stuff about $GAME and $TEAM?! If you're a REAL fan, you will always be positive about your team!!!
One or two regulars on the board will, in each game day thread, declare the Hurricanes the losers before the game starts; this declaration is generally accompanied by completely outlandish predictions about what will happen in the game, the state of the team before during and after, the phase of the moon, and the price of tea in China. Leave them alone, it's a game-day ritual that has resulted in far more wins than losses (not to mention a lot of entertainment for the rest of the board)--and if you get a steel-toed boot to the head for hailing on somebody for "being negative" in the game thread, suck it up and don't whine. That's a game-day ritual, too. This goes double for the playoffs. It's serious business. We're not kidding. The Forms Must Be Obeyed.

    16. Who or what is Pierre McPlankton?
That would be NBC/TSN/Sports Illustrated gadfly Pierre McGuire, owing to his strong resemblance to Plankton on Sponge Bob, Square Pants. Despite being employed as a scout, assistant coach and head coach of the Hartford Whalers (or maybe because of it), he's never had a kind word for the Canes. Despite his Canadian-centric job and views, he was born in Englewood, NJ.

    17. What is the difference between a game of consequence, mega huge game, must win game and pivotal global event?
That would be defined thusly, by Vinniebagadonuts in this post.
    1) Preseason games are to be mostly ignored.
    2) Any game with two points on the line is a "game of consequence."
    3) A game of consequence played between two teams fighting for the same playoff spot in the last third of the season is a "mega-huge game."
    4) "Must-win games" are games -- generally in the last week or two of the season -- when a team will see it's odds to make the post-season shrink to under 1%.
    5) Games at the conference final or Stanley Cup Final are "pivotal global events."

You know... since the Penalty Box is on the FAQ, shouldn't there now be something about Fanhome/Scout?

What are the levels that are reached by number of posts? The old board had titles like checking line center. Are they the same on this board? Is there a breakdown? I know there was a period where we could customize our title's also...is that going to happen here?

GreensboroHurricanes – The guy that brought us all together in the first place and effectively founded the Hurricanes community on Fanhome. First moderator of the board, now retired from moderatin’. Served from 1999-2003.
After reading about all the drama about the transition from "there" to here, it makes me glad I'm out of the moderating game.

Sometimes I miss it, and the something like this happens and I realize it's less stressful on this side of it.

Drama is an understatement, that's for sure. I just feel bad for jeff because he has caught most of the drama coming his way. Anyway...

I don't think I posted much on the Canes board at the "other" place but I saw how many people were in here tonight so I decided to see what all the fuss was about. Got to say, I love this thread. Jeff, you did a heck of a job here. Its very interesting to me, even as a Flyers fan not knowing too many of the posters listed. The JDBeans info brings back both good and bad memories. The guy was CS violation removed annoying but at the same time, funny as heck.

Anyway, just wanted to say hello. Good luck this season everyone. Can't wait to see the puck drop!

Actually, it was Hurricane Camille that wrote the FAQ. She started this project earlier this year and has been adding to it ever since then. Jeffbear has merely ported it over to here. Maybe we should delete this thread and have Camille copy and paste it herself. She deserves all the credit.

Woops. Well then. Great job Camille! Like I said above, I love the thread. Very interesting and entertaining.

    Thanks NoMich!!

It's all good, mang--nobody ever reads it anyway.
