Lest we forget Henderson's true colors

The last thing the Mets need right now is sage advice from a self-absorbed "special instructor" who pouts and stomps his feet when he doesn't get his way. Ricky Henderson may be listed in the Mets Media Guide as 'special instructor' and he may be the reigning champ of MLB stolen bases, but his true colors were on full display as a Met in the '99 playoffs vs the Braves in Game 6. After manager Bobby Valentine lifted him late in the game, Ricky and teammate Bobby Bonilla escaped to the clubhouse to play cards (that's what I said--to play cards) ignoring the last 3 innings of the game instead of in the dugout supporting their teammates who were attempting to erase the 3-games-to-0 deficit the Braves put them in.

In case you don't remember, this game was crucial and the Mets having bounced back and won Games 4 and 5 were battling to be the first team to come from a 3-0 deficit to win a postseason series. The Braves would eventually win Game 6 amidst the ignorance of the two 'clubhouse card sharks' who continued to play even after the saddened Mets entered the clubhouse at game's end. What a nice picture! One that, as a Met fan, I will never forget.

So despite his illustrious career, I believe Ricky Henderson's services would best be suited elsewhere. It was a mistake to have him rear his ugly head at Mets Spring Training and it surely would be a disservice to the Mets and all Mets fans to allow him to participate with them now--or ever. Any help that Reyes or Gomez might glean from his experience would best be obtained from tapes or other sources, and unless Willie wants his two speedsters to learn the art of team ignorance or how to deal from the bottom of a deck of cards, Henderson's the wrong man for the job.
    --LoveEmHateEm, 6/22

    P.S.:

Maybe the 'special instructor' type the Mets need to shake things up a bit right now is Frank Howard:

    One of the most unforgettable moments in Mets history happened 25 years ago on this date after the team returned to Shea Stadium following a flight from St. Louis. Manager George Bamberger confronted Craig Swan outside the team bus after the pitcher had complained throughout the long -- it was delayed for hours -- trip home. The Mets still flew commercial flights then, and some teams had begun flying charters. When Swan challenged Bamberger, coach Frank Howard -- all 6-foot-8, 315 pounds of him -- appeared from nowhere and, with one hand grasping the pitcher at the knot of his necktie, hoisted Swan and pinned him against the bus. When Howard, nicknamed Hondo, brought Swan back to earth 20 seconds later, only remnants of Swan's shirt and anger remained. Stunned by Howard's demonstration of strength, John Stearns called Howard "Hondopolis" because "he's as big as a city." {Mets.com, 6/19}

    % $ # & * % # $ !!!

Let me rephrase that: 'Tis bleak m'lord as the Mets drop yet another one and lose to the Twins, 6-2. But just think, in just a little over 3 months the playoff spots will be all sewn up. And with a little bit o' luck, the other teams in the NL East could be performing even worse than our beloved Mets. Hey, it could happen:

Mets clinch playoff berth with worst record ever
as they enter the post-season at 78-84!
Amazin's benefit as rest of NL East Division tanks

    ...but wait, there's more:

    Miracle Mets of '07
    sweep Yanks in World Series!

(You didn't expect me to pout through this entire slump, didja?)

    GAME PLAYED JUNE 19, 2007:

Santana's gem amidst foggy Mets breakdown not conducive to TV life span

After last night's game, it's hard to believe that if the Mets win tonight they will have taken the best of three from the Twins! Sound exciting? Maybe not to the average, understandably disgruntled Met fan but tonight the Mets will try for their first series win since May 31st. And if they do win tonight (get ready 'cause here comes some more psychological reasoning), it could be a big psychological boost for the Mets (there, I said it). In fact, what's most amazing is that after a piss-poor 3-13 June thus far, the Mets are still in 1st place in the NL East. The 'joy of being in 1st', however, may be short lived primarily due to the lackadaisical way the Mets are showing their 'concern' on the field with spotty hitting and absentmindedness that begs for some sort of discipline. Their collective heads just don't seem all present or accounted for. (Where has Willie been amidst all this, anyway? Shouldn't he be breaking water coolers or something?).

To be honest, this 'show up at work one day and become a team of drift factors the next' is like a trip down menory lane with Wes and the Gang (some memories are best left undisturbed). But if they concentrate tonight as in last night's 9-0 loss, then they more than deserve to be classified with Westrum's Follies of the Mid-60's. When the average hot dog vendor pays more attention to the goings on of the game than some of the Mets, it might be time for a readjustment whether it be with the team or my TV set. Perhaps I can readjust my TV set as it goes flying down my stairway after tonight's game. Oops, too late--already been done last night. See ya at Sears.

    GAME PLAYED JUNE 18, 2007:

    METS WIN ONE
Maine paces Amazin's past Twins, 8-1

...and it's about time they won a game too, isn't it? It's also great to see the offense pop tall and produce. Thanks, Maine, for helping this batch of runs stick! Like BMF, I think Maine and Perez are the leading starters but I'd also like to throw in Sosa. I feel most confident in a Mets win when these three guys start. The other two...well let's just say 'naaaaah'.

NOTES: Ricky Ledee has some swing, man! ... The Mets better not dick around with any of these hot prospects like Gomez, Ledee, etc to obtain a reliever 'cause this is our insurance for the future, plus one never knows which 40 year old starter may get injured next wherein the Gotay's and the Ledee's of the world would be desperately needed ... The whole starting lineup got at least one hit last night--nice ... The Twins put together one helluva highlight reel during [I think it was] the 5th inning last night as all 3 outs made were of the 'circus' variety. They dove, crashed, and flipped to get out of the inning. (now THAT'S heart--and balls) ... I couldn't recognize which ESPN announcer was speaking (probably due to his voice being muffled by the walls of his bowels) but as I would periodically check the Red Sox-Braves score, I happen to catch this particular announcer getting 'dates' and 'leagues' incorrect (I think he might've been a little drunk). Case in point: He garbled, "Oh yeah last year, the Braves relievers blew 29 saves and that's what cost them the AL East Title." ESPN's job application: NAME, ADDRESS, WHEN CAN YOU START.

BLOWN CALL OF THE NIGHT: Top of the 3rd, Bartlett grounds out to Wright and is apparently thrown out at 1st by at least THREE FEET (No kiddin'!), but 1st base umpire John Hirschbeck calls him safe. What a tool. There are close plays and there are ridiculous calls--this would be the latter.

    GAME PLAYED JUNE 16, 2007:

Youth and speed can only do so much
    as Yanks down Mets 11-8

Whoever said the Greek proverb 'Old age and treachery will overcome youth and skill' had it backwards if they were talking about the Mets the past few days as a recent renaissance youth movement has taken root in the Amazin's camp.

And ain’t Glavine the one who was giving his team a “talkin’ to” the other day? Hey Glavine, how about a little less lip and a little more action. Practice what you preach, pal. And the last thing we need for Glavine to do is to shuffle off like a child looking for excuses instead of solutions as he equated pitchers' slumps in Mets.com yesterday: "...'We're just like hitters.' [Glavine's statement] wasn't intended as a pointed reference, though it could have been."

    Some leader.

The last out of yesterday's game was no big suprise either. How about puttin' a little OT BP in, CB. It couldn’t hoit. And bring CD witchya, too. Don’t worry ’bout Lo D or Green or Stache or anybody else, ’cause once you 2 guys get back in the groove, everyone else that's Men-dozin' off will fall into place. YOU GUYS ARE SUPPOSED TO LEAD, SO LEAD! (No wonder Willie doesn't have a desire to assign anyone on the team with the "C" on their jersey--nobody has yet risen to that level!)

And how ’bout that youth and that speed factor? Damn! That’s fun to watch--genuine desire at play! Maybe the lackluster elders will somewhat awaken, participate, and emulate. One can only hope. In the meantime, I'm gonna enjoy the display of artistry and talent that the young guns are showcasing, and hope that today El Duque is an anomaly in my proverb interpretation.

    GAME PLAYED JUNE 15, 2007:

    Mets speed past Yanks, 2-0
    and halt 2 streaks

Test complete. Mets pass...barely. (But a win is a win). Perez wins the duel with Clemens and hands him his first loss of his [shortened] year. The Mets also halted 2 streaks Friday night--their 5 game losing streak and the Yankees' 9 game winning streak. *Poof* Just like that! And ain't nuthin' better than beating both the Yanks and Roger 'Roids in the same breath. (I'm still pissed off at 'Roid Boy' and his ample-sized head for roidily throwing the bat at Piazza lo those many years ago). And what a pleasure it is to see some of the Mets hitting again! And the way that Oliver Perez hung in there after it appeared that he would implode before our eyes was a treat. (I think he retired something like 12 straight Yankees after a couple of near catastrophes -- one with the bases juiced early in the game and another after pitching out of a jam with an assist from speed demon Carlos Gomez in LF with runners on 1st and 2nd in the bottom of the 4th). The bullpen trio of Feliciano, Smith and Wagner combined with Perez for the shutout. Nice to see the bullpen alive again, too.

Another thrill was hearing "Let's Go Mets" bellowing throughout Yankee Stadium as the Yankee fans tred to quell it with teary eyed booing. (Waaah). But I tell ya, the amount of players the Mets are leaving in scoring position is not good at all. (But a win is a win). And whassup with the offensive capabilities of Carlos Beltran and Carlos "Golden Sombrero" Delgado both combining for 6 K's and going a combined 1 for 8? They seem like automatic outs! (But a win is a win). Jose Reyes (3 for 3, 3 SB, 2 RBI's and one sweet HR) and Carlos Gomez (1 SB, 1 CS, and what a play out in LF to double Matsui off of 2nd to end the 4th!) were especially fun to watch as they cruised the basepaths without much of a challenge. The Mets beat the Yankees for the 3rd time in 4 tries so far this year. The Mets also dealt them their 3rd shutout of the season. And the Mets ran on Posada just about every chance they got as they were 5 for 7 in the SB Dept. They say speed kills...just ask the Yankees.

    THE TEST

OK, all teams go through a slump, but ya know something: I don't care about 'other teams' at this point. I feel that if the Mets don't take this weekend seriously, then they have failed The Test for '07. The Test being the defining of either a team that cares or a team that doesn't care, the latter spelling almost certain death of any hopes for a meaningful season. Losing first place by Monday is the LEAST of the Mets problems. First place should be the last thing on their minds. And Willie should step up and let them know in no uncertain terms that WNNING, coupled with a STRONG DESIRE to win, supercedes anything else -- especially any privileges that they may think they have due them from what they have already accomplished the first 2 months of this year (or in 2006 for that matter). It ain't 'yesterday', it's how they perform from this moment on that will define them as a team--or not. It's your move Mets.

    GUTLESS METS DROP ANOTHER
They're playing like a bunch of jerkoffs

I don't exactly know what is on the collective minds of the Mets these days, but motivation, winning, desire, and standing up for your team ain't in that mix. Last night, Penny thought Green was 'stealing' signs from him. So after Penny struck Green out swiging to end the 3rd inning, he all but challenged Green to a fight as he approached Green who was still in the batters box removing his foot protector. Green was suprised and taken aback at the obviously irate Penny and all Green could do was look 'confused'. I'm here to tell you that Green just missed a golden opportunity to put his team back on track. I don't mean by getting another double, I mean by charging after Penny and decking him with all the anger that has filled so many Mets and Mets fans over the past week. Sometimes it's time for a fight and that was one of them. Wille needs to institute a "BALLS EDICT" and encourage such an awakening. If he's not gonna motivate them as manager, then he needs to give tacit approval for them to charge across the diamond at the least provocation. Perhaps they can manage that. Heavens knows they aren't being managed now.

    Mets hold that Tiger
    offense down and win, 3-0

Well there won't be any Mets 5-game losing streak on Friday night I can tell you that. Now doesn't that feel better? Nothing like starting the weekend off with a nice piece of NY Strip Steak with mushrooms, and a side dish of Sosa, Wright, Delgado and some heated Wags for dessert. I don't know about the rest of you Mets fans out there but I'm full for now. Sosa and Wagner combined for a 4-hit shutout of the Detroit Tigers Friday night as the Mets ended their longest losing streak of the year at 4.

NOTES: Funniest play of the game was when C3 (aka Carlos Gomez, aka CIII) was on 3rd and tagged and scored on a fly by CD (take a guess) in the 9th and everyone from the Tiger announcers to a very pissed off Jim Leyland thought C3 left the bag too soon. But the replay even had the Tigers announcers correcting themselves. I guess they ain’t seen anything that fast in Detroit since about 6 hours earlier down at the Chevy plant when they rolled out their last Corvette of the day.

BLOWN CALLS OF THE DAY: None to report ... at least none against the Mets anyway. (insert smiley face here)

    GAME PLAYED JUNE 7, 2007:

    Phils sweep Mets
    Instant replay established as
    viable alternative to umpire calls

So the Mets now lost 4 straight and are in their biggest funk of the season. So what. The Phils happen to be on their biggest roll of the season. And if you think this pattern will last, then I have some oceanfront property for you in Topeka, folks. Despite the bullpen sending another game down the tubes, I think that yesterday will do wonders for the Mets. They were all cajoling and laughing anyway and why not? They're in first place. And the Braves who also happen to be sucking lately are still NOT in first place. Just as the Phils are NOT in first place, too. Last night's game also produced a Mets rarity--B2B2BHR's. This only occured 7 times since the Mets were born in '62. And despite the 3-HR barrage, that was the extent of the Mets scoring last night (comparable to the precious few runs they've been scoring the past week or so). The Mets offense along with the bullpen could use a B-12 shot right about now. But remember, we are at the "saw" end and the hot teams are at the "see" end of that playground contraption. This, like bad weather, will not last.

NOTES: Delgado, Wright, and Lo Duca hit BTBTBHR's last night for only the 7th time in Mets history. The last time was 4/17/89 with Straw/McReynolds/Keith ... Wagner blew the save last night by giving up a game-tying HR in the 9th to his former teammate and nemesis Pat Burrell. This was Wags first blown save since 8/1/06! ... Lo Duca looked pissed off when Feliciano shook off his millionth sign calling for an outside slider to Utley in the 9th. Instead, Utley walks with Howard on deck and the Mets up 3-2. When they all gathererd on the mound to await Wags to come in to pitch to Howard, Lo Duca didn't even make eye contact with Feliciano ... Last night's game was the 3448th regular season game played at Shea eclipsing the 3447-mark held by Ebbetts Field before our cousins the Brooklyn Dodgers headed West ...Delgado's 6th inning HR went 450 feet and Gary Cohen said that it probably hit one of the team buses out there ... Phils manager Charlie Manuel got ejected for arguing over whether Wright's HR actually did go out but he probably just wanted to get his fat ass into the air-conditioned clubhouse. Next game: Friday night at Detroit, 7:05pm ET, Sosa vs Durbin.

BLOWN CALLS OF THE DAY: NONE! Actually the umps were very favorable toward the Mets all night. (It's about time). PLUS, last night marked the first game in MLB history that a critical call was decided with the aid of 'instant replay technology'. Oh sure, the umps won't admit it but following Wright's triple/HR, on-deck batter and Salesman of the Month Paul Lo Duca graphically pointed out to the umps with voice and bat in hand that the replay on the jumbotron of Wright's "triple" was actually a home run as it plainly showed the ball hitting the Wise Potato Chips sign instead of the wall below. And even though it bounced back onto the field, it clearly was a HR which is what the umpire caucus eventually yielded (and which also prompted Phils mgr to be ejected). Despite the loss, it sure felt good getting that call and about a half dozen others last night to go our way. And for all you nay-saying purists out there, all I got to say is: Ya see, technology works and umps being human is PRECISELY why we need to incorporate this technology into the game. Ya can't go backwards. When was the last time you took a chariot to work or told time with a sundial? Wake up people--IT'S THE 21ST CENTURY! Technology is our friend and is here to help get it right. (I wonder if Selig was watching last night).

    Endy injured in Mets' loss

BLOWN CALL OF THE DAY: Tail end of a 1st inning DP, Endy was safe but called out by 1B umpire Marvin Hudson. Upon replay, even the ESPN announcer said that he looked safe.

Next game tonite vs Phils at Shea, 7:10pm ET, John Maine vs Hole Camels

    GAME PLAYED JUNE 5, 2007:

    Phils outlast Mets in 11

    - Glavine denied #296 - Mets.com

BLOWN CALLS OF THE DAY: Bottom of the 4th with the count 2 and 1 to Lo Duca, HP ump ED MONTAGUE calls the next pitch a strike when it was so far outside you could drive a friggin dump truck between the ball and the outer edge of the plate. This one was at least 8 inches outside. Now some people may say that quibbling over balls and strikes is superfluous but I say that if you have a job as microscopically observed as being a MLB umpire, then you had better get all the calls right or let technology pick up the slack.

HONORABLE MENTION: Top of the 8th in Colorado, Lance Berkman checks his swing for what would have surely been ball four but 3rd base ump ED RAPUANO said that he went around. Replay plainly shows that Berkman held up in time. (Ya gotta love them aerial view replays). Berkman was ejected for arguing the outlandish call with Mr Ed and since you can't argue 'balls and strikes', it seems to have been the only correct call that Rapuano made in that sequence. Here's a thought: Let's institute an instant replay rule in MLB. Hey Selig, here's your chance to do some good for the game. We have electric scoreboards now and they seem to be working fine. How far removed from being a baseball purist would the establishment of a rule be that would make more calls correct? This to me would seem like one of the most sensible rules ever instituted in MLB history. What would it hurt besides a few bruised egos in the umpire community?

    JUNE GAUNTLET

This bears repeating as it is a most unique June schedule for the Mets and is arguably the toughest month in ML baseball history. The schedulers in their infinite wisdom decided to line the Mets up with a slew of '06 playoff teams. So, after the 3-game set with the Phils, the Mets play NINETEEN straight games against all the teams that have made the '06 post season (with the exception of San Diego games which follow in July/August). Not only is this the toughest month ever, it is the first time in ML history that one team was scheduled to face ALL of the preceding seasons' playoff teams. This was worth repeating (see recent issues of The Daily Papers) because if the Mets make it to July 1st at or near 50-33, to me it will have been a successful month. That translates to a '15-13' June. (In comparison, April was 15-9, May was 19-9). Good luck, Amazins'!

    GAME PLAYED JUNE 3, 2007:

    Mets lose, 4-1
    Perez runs aground after 4

Looks like Oliver Perez's Sunday afternoon "no-no" wasn't meant to be. Perez was blazing an impressive pace after the first few innings striking out 4 after 3 innings and facing the minimum 12 batters after 4, thanks to a 5-4-3 DP erasing a leadoff walk to end the 4th. It all came undone however in the 5th inning as another Perez seemed to have showed up on the mound unable to find his rhythm or the strike zone effectively as the D'Backs scored twice and made those two runs stick for the win. In all fairness, lack of run support also had a hand in the Mets 20th loss of the season against 35 wins. It woulda been nice facing the Phils this Tuesday having won another series win, especially after the Phils came from behind twice to beat the Giants on Sunday (they were the only team in the NL East with a win yesterday), but the series with the Phils will be the least of the Mets problems. After their 3 games with the Phils, the Mets face nothing but 2006 playoff teams for 19 straight games. Somebody quick send the Mets a 'get well soon' card. Final: D'Backs 4, Mets 1.

NOTES: This series loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks was the first series loss for the Mets in 2007 to a team outside the NL East ... Carlos Gomez got 2 of the Mets 6 hits yesterday and it would be nice for C3 to get hot right about now ... Delgado K'd 3 times Sunday earning him the hat trick, but one should be credited to the HP ump (see below) ... The injured Shawn Green is said to be bored to tears, probably from standing in front of the mirror waiting for his hair to grow back ... Gary Sheffield made some questionable comments directed in part toward Hispanic players in GQ magazine. Ron Darling said that he's known Sheffield since he was 16 and that he still sounds like he's 16 ... D'Backs SS Alberto Callaspo has recently joined the Brett Myers Wife Beaters Club -- now there's a pair of brave fellas ... Next game at Shea vs the Phils this Tuesday 7:10pm ET, Galvine vs Moyer.

BLOWN CALLS OF THE DAY: Bottom 2nd, Johnson on 1st, D'Backs pitcher Doug Davis balks, but 1st base umpire Jeff Nelson doesn't call it ... Bottom 4th, Delgado called out on strikes by HP ump Dusty Dellinger on a pitch that was about a furlong inside ... This next one's a two-fer: Bottom 8th, the count on Reyes is 3 and 0, the next pitch was a mile outside for a strike, the next pitch was a mile inside for another strike. But try as he might, Dusty Dellinger couldn't get Reyes out as he walked on an all-to-obvous high pitch. I guess if Dusty woulda called that ridiculously high pitch a strike, he woulda been found out. (Musn't call too much attention on ourselves, eh Dusty?) And what the hell kind of name is 'Dusty' for an umpire anyway? For him I guess it fits, 'cause he makes calls like there's about 4,732 pounds of dust in each one of his eyeballs. What a jerkoff.

    GAME PLAYED JUNE 2, 2007:

    SOSA SUBDUES SNAKES' STREAK
Delgado, Gotay homer in Mets' win

Jorge Sosa is becoming a crowd pleaser as he sent 45,000 Shea faithful home happy with his artistry on the mound. His line of 1 run on 5 hits, 4 K's, and a walk after 6.2 innings of work was plenty good for the Met Machine before the trusty bullpen came on in and mowed the remaining competition down thus bringing the Diamondbacks' 8-game winning streak to a screeching halt. Sunday's game at Shea is at 1:10pm ET, Perez vs Davis. I think this is where Perez throws his no-hitter.

NOTES: Gotay missed one by a few feet Friday night but Saturday it was OUTTA HERE!!! His 3-run blast in the 7th made it 6-1 ... David Newhan hit a single outta the infield on Saturday and this base hit scored a run. Hot diggety! ... Delgado's line was 2 for 5, 1HR, 1 2B, 2R, 1 RBI. His double was down the left side ... Alou sez he's still not feeling right after running before the game Saturday. Settle in Endy, it might be a long season for you pal.

BLOWN CALL OF THE DAY: Not a critical game-tipping call but in the top of the 8th, one out, runner on 1st, Joe Smith walked Hudson. Had this questionable 'ball four' been a called strike, it woulda been a strike-em-out-throw-em-out DP ending the inning. HP umpire Tim Tschida saw it as too high probably because the ball hit Castro's glove a little higher than where he had positioned it, but it was still low enough for a strike. Like I said, no harm no foul, but these rotten calls need to be all exposed whether they're critical to the outcome of the game or not.

    GAME PLAYED JUNE 1, 2007:

    METS LOSE TO STREAKING SNAKES
    Webb, Dellinger cement D'backs win

Brandon Webb baffled the Mets and pitched a gem for the D'Backs at Shea Friday night as the Arizona Diamondbacks extended their winning streak to 8 games. Julio Franco, in at 3rd base in place of the ailing David Wright who sat out the game with back spasms, played in his 2500th Major League game as the injury-plagued Mets dropped the first of this weekend's 3-game set against the red-hot D'Backs. John Maine who started the game gave up a 2-run HR but overall was pitching above average; however, Webb was better. Next game: Saturday at Shea, 1:10pm ET, Sosa vs Hernandez (El Duque's half brother).

NOTES: It's been a while since David Newhan has hit a ball out of the infield. The IF hit he was credited with in the bot 8th, a Baltimore chop off home plate, was ruled a single and an error enabling him to go to 2nd. Hey, any way we can get it is fine with me, but the lad seems to have no power whatsoever ... Ruben Gotay came on to pinch hit for Mota and hit a ball down past the RF pole missing a 2-run HR by not very much. He then hit a sharp grounder off the 1st baseman's glove for a single which scored Newhan from 2nd for the Mets lone run ... The ump's bad call at 2B (see below) in the top of the inning would have loomed even larger had the Mets tied it at 2 in the bottom of the 8th with the near-Gotay blast. Another "that's the way the ball bounces" moment later in the same inning came when Reyes just missed an extra base hit down the 3B line (and I'm talking about an inch or two). That would have made for an interesting situation with 2 out, the game tied, Reyes at 2nd, and Chavez coming to the plate. Oh well ... And just when I was about to get all excited about Mota's return, he throws a gopher ball for a 3-run HR putting the Snakes up 5-zip ... Franco stole a base last night extending his own record for the oldest ML player to have stolen a bag ... 1:10 PM game today, so will they rest Lo Duca and put Castro in there? I say rest Lo D and use Castro who by the way has HR power.

BLOWN CALL OF THE DAY: This one's a biggie. Two outs top of the 8th. Altho Easley could have done a better job selling* the near-force out at 2nd after receiving the throw form Franco, the runner on 1st was called safe by 2nd base umpire Dusty Dellinger when replays showed that there was daylight (or stadiumlight, whichever you prefer) between the sliding foot of the baserunner and the bag at the moment Easley caught the ball. The next batter hit a 3-run HR off of Guillermo Mota (on in relief of John Maine) making it 5-0. It would have been nice if the game remained 2-0 but it would be better if these umpires would collectively and consistently get in the habit of making correct calls. Instant replay anyone? We're gonna need something to supplement these moronic calls made by these self-absorbed deities of the diamond who believe they can do no wrong.

    * Insead of standing almost nonchalantly vertical with his foot in the middle of the bag, Damion Easley could have stretched for the ball, and then he could have confidently removed his foot after making the catch to head toward the dugout as that would have been the 3rd out, as opposed to momentarily standing and staring like a deer caught in a pair of headlights.
