Ty's 2008 Early-Bird Picks:

ACC Atlantic Favorite: Wake Forest
  • Boston College loses their hero Matt Ryan despite a very easy out of conference schedule against Rhode Island, Kent State, Notre Dame, and a Kevin Smith-less UCF. They could compete, but not my favorite.
  • Clemson held strong in 2007 despite few returning starters. However, out of conference games against South Carolina and an improving Alabama make it tough. They will also be on the road for Boston College, Florida State, Virginia, and Wake Forest.
  • Florida State is probably my next pick, and could very well win. Easy road games, as well as an easy out of conference schedule with the exception of Florida.
  • North Carolina State plays easier ACC teams at home, but out of conference against South Carolina and South Florida will make a tough season even tougher for a struggling team.
  • Maryland is a team I like, but on the road against many good teams including Virginia Tech as well as playing California will make things very tough.
  • Wake Forest has to get past Florida State and Miami on the road, and the division is their's. They have an easy out of conference schedule with Baylor, Navy, Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt to help their ranking. Boston College and Clemson at home, and they could be playing in December for the Orange Bowl.
ACC Coastal Winner: Virginia Tech
  • Duke isn't much of a concern ever. Georgia Tech is under new coach Paul Johnson, and I believe it will be some time before his new way of coaching will be into effect. North Carolina isn't much of a threat, and has a tough out of conference schedule.
  • Miami has their ACC schedule play into their favor, but I don't expect enough of a bounce back to put them in the running. I figure early losses to Florida and possible Texas A&M on the road could set them back early and for the season.
  • Virginia must face USC and UConn early in the year to get going. They later have to take on Virginia Tech and Wake Forest on the road which won't help matters.
  • Virginia Tech is still short a team on their schedule, but an easy schedule thus far including Nebraska, ECU, and Furman leaves them with a semi-tough ACC schedule to work through.
Most Interesting Matchup: Maryland vs. California
  • Alright, so there may be more interesting ones than this one, but I think it will stand to define the ACC is. Cal beat Tennessee last year in their opener which immediately suggested the Pac-10 was the better of the two. Cal has since struggled significantly, and I don't think next year will be much better. An ACC win over this Pac-10 team could help the ACC move back into the spotlight some. If not, things will just continue to look worse for a once proud conference.
  • On a side note, I believe Rutgers is going to push to schedule Virginia Tech to make ESPN for a Thursday night matchup. Originally, they pushed for Boston College who then filled their schedule. I don't think it will happen, but it's possible.
I'll continue with more as I can.

I don't think Florida St. is going to be anything to worry about next year. They are going to suffer from this academic scandal that rocked them this year. They have lost a number of players. starting QB Lee, 2nd leading tackler Hayes, their best interior Lineman Guion all were caught up in it and declared early. Sophmore TE Charlie Graham has transfered to a JuCo to get his grades back, and those that are still around are all suspended for at least the first 3 games. Not to mention the seniors lost.

Depending on how their schedule shakes out, I could see them starting 2-2, 2-3 and maybe not even make a bowl game next year.

Granted I am still biased against the ACC and feel many of their teams are overrated on an annual basis. I suppose I just dislike enough of the teams in the division this year that I think Florida State could have a chance. I can't see Boston College doing what they did, and they were very overrated. Clemson is another team I like, but I don't know if they have it.

3 acc games for ECU, and we were close at VT and NC St last year and beat UNC....why didn't ACC pick ECU up? oh yeah that's right cause we had the crappy coach

I think ECU has a better chance of find its way into the Big East than the ACC. I don't see a BCS conference picking up more than 12 teams. It would mean at least one 7-team division, meaning there would be very little cross-divisional play within the conference.

ACC didn't have to get Miami or BC but i think BC has been a great asset to the ACC

but ECU needs to get out of C-USA and C-USA could fill the void with APP St if they want to keep a NC team in the conference

I don't know what either Miami or Boston College have to do with this, but on that note, I'd say Miami has played a much bigger role than Boston College has. Miami was a dynasty when they came to the ACC. Boston College has an excellent bowl game winning streak, but let's look at which bowl games they have been to before giving them too much credit.
