Oden is overrated.
He may not even be the best freshman on the team. Mike Conley, Jr. was pretty damn impressive during the UNC game. Oden doesn't have the same offensive ability as say, Brandon Wright or Spencer Hawes. Defensively, he's an advanced specimen, but he looks awkward on the offensive end of the court. He'll have a strong season since he'll be a mismatch for almost every team that he faces, but there'll be freshmen that have a bigger impact on their teams, and a couple that'll simply be better. But thanks to national exposure people won't know that. Right now, the two best freshmen in the nation appear to be Chase Budinger and Brandon Wright. |

If you think he's only ok right now...wait till he's got two good hands. I mean the man is playing pretty well right now in the first two games in limited time and is doing it all with his left hand. Just wait till he gets the use of his natural hand back.

The main reason that I consider him to be overrated is not because he doesn't dominate. He seems to do just that. I think he's overrated because he's not that skilled offensively, and won't face a respectable match up until he becomes a pro. Defensively he may be all that, and there's no question that there's a presence about him that intimidates opponents, but it's still difficult to consider a player to be great when he's so limited offensively. Of course, I've always considered Shaq to be grossly overrated, and again it's because he's a man among boys, with a limited bag of tricks. It's hard for me to give full credit to any player that can't shoot jump shots or step outside, a la Timmy D. By the way... correction on the best freshman in the nation: Kevin Durant. He might be the most dominant player in all of college basketball. Last edited by DocK16 : 12-11-2006 at 09:51 PM. |
