Holy crap!

Per season, that's as much as the Preds paid Kariya just three years ago. I like Marty... but is he worth that much?

It is a fair bit - but hopefully it's a sign that the Preds are going to be spending a little more coin this upcoming season. It could likely mean a defensemen will be moved (re-signing RFA's don't look to come at a cheap price). Have to pay Erat a fair bit for him to give up some years of UFA eligibility.

Looks like the league didn't like the contract:

The contract will be restructured then still go through.

I think this is an overpayment, league contracts are getting out of control again

The main problem with the contract is the length - 7 years IMHO.

And they were OK with DiPietro's contract? Please.

EDIT: Doesn't have anything to do with the length... it has to do with the salary fluctuations.

Actually my comment was in respect of my opinion regarding the contract itself - not why the league veteod the contract. I just personally don't think you should give out such long-term contracts (unless the guy was a franchise player).

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, again, I like Marty... and he's only in his mid-20s... but to give him that much money? AND seven years? **AND** a NTC? That's just crazy.

I personally don't like the idea of the Preds spending more than they have to. They've already proven that they can put together a very competitive team without spending the ungodly amounts that other teams do. Since there's still a clause providing the new owners with an 'out' if we were to lose $20 million and not get 14,000 in paid attendance, I'd rather see the team get guys that are under appreciated, work hard and fit in the system. At least that's what I'd like to see until we get the corporate support we need, or until the next generation is old enough to buy their own tickets.

IMHO, the NHL is pricing the fans out of the game. Look no further than the empty seats in Detroit for proof of that.
