I got to watch most of the game. The Canadians were good, but they took a ton of penalties (it being international play), which eventually will catch up to them. This should settle in to be an interesting series once they get to know each other, though.

I haven't seen the highlights yet. Does Canada look superior to the Russians or was it a game of bounces (I heard Turris scored on a penalty shot)? Did the score accurately represent the play?

I missed the first but watched all of the second and third periods. I thought Canada was clearly better. They took 11 penalties but the PK was so good it didn't matter. Even with a 5 on 3 for over a minute, the Russians just passed it around, never getting a clear shot on net. I thought Sam Gagner was Canada's strongest player.

One thing I hate about these international tournaments is the "call everything" (clean bodychecks) mentality of the european referees (I assume it was a european crew). Hopefully it'll be North American officials when the scene shifts back here.

If Canada can beat them in Russia with a more European called game, I predict it could be a rout when they get back to Canada, with the Canadians less tentative about taking penalties for physical play.

I can't believe they are calling it a Super Series. I was about 7 when the first series was on. Guess that dates me pretty well. We were given time off of school to watch this tourney. We never get time off to watch rockets launch, vietnam, man on the moon or anything else, but we were given time off to watch this hockey tourney. It was huge. It was far more than just a hockey series.

Plus we weren’t playing the Russians. We were playing the Soviet Red Army team. Maybe a hockey game against Osama bin laden and al qaida sponsored by Monsanto would start to .fractionally represent the meaning of that 72 series.

Players were expected to and did do everything to win back then. And man did those Soviet refs ever cheat. Well it was expected of them, they were the evil empire after all.

This is just an exhibition series though. Who cares if we lose? Its not like its for a gold medal or a world championship or anything. Its just a little exhibition to make some money.

Go Canada, yawn, whatever.

The '72 series was before my time, but I wish I could have been around to see it. For right now though, the NHL season is close enough to smell but far enough off to tease, I'm starved for hockey, and a collection of youth are playing with the red Maple Leaf on their chest....that's enough for me to get a little excited about this.

Like I said before though, I think they could have hyped this up a lot more than they did.

awfully quiet in here...

We're Canadians. We LOVE junior hockey.

Canada won game one 4-2 over Russia to open the eight-game Super Series.

I agree with some of what you're saying. I too was around for the original. It will never, ever be duplicated, it can't be because of the multi-faceted media reporting we have today. We weren't given time off, but tvs were wheeled into the classroom for everyone to watch, it was fantastic, such civic pride and involvement. I can't see that ever being repeated for anything let alone sports.

The biggest difference I can remember is the newspaper coverage and it's probably why I rail against today's hockey media. The guys in those days could bring the games, players and series alive. Most of them were writing pulitzer prize material, not fluff and inuendo like today. My dad would bring home the sports pages from every paper he could find at work during the series so I could pour over every line.

Your post reminds me of a line from Dryden's book. I'm paraphrasing but it went something like, "The best hockey anyone ever watched was that which was played when you were 10 years old".

That doesn't mean this series is a yawn. On the contrary, my description is "interesting". No reason to dismiss it.

I can see it now... some teen with a bomb tied to his body under the jersey sitting behind the Canadian net... waiting to pull the cord...

Hockey has changed. Butthead wants to remove the "violence" from the game with all his stupid rule changes. You'll never, ever see the kind of series we had in '72 again.
