Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, according to a published report.
The Rocky Mountain News on Thursday said Cutler was diagnosed with the disease in recent weeks, but the team is confident they can successfully manage his health.
Citing team sources, the newspaper said the team’s medical staff is prepared to deal with the treatment of the 25-year-old Cutler, who has the most serious form of the disease.
In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas stops producing insulin, which is needed to convert food into energy. Patients are required to receive daily insulin injections.
In addition to the daily insulin shots, Cutler will be required to closely monitor his diet and blood sugar levels. According to the Rocky Mountain News, former Broncos defensive end Mike Sinclair played with the disease during his career.
