The most points the Caps can get is 102.

If the Canes get 103 they win the division. 69 plus 34 = 103

34 points equals 17 wins.

The point about Atlanta and Florida is correct, but how many here see that scenario as plausible?

then the panthers or thrashers win 14 or more (not counting OT games) then this whole 17 magic number goes out the window..
If the Thrashers win 14 of their last 19, for a 77% winning percentage, after winning 46% of their first 63 games, they deserve to win the division.

If the Panthers win 14 of their last 17 games, for a 82% winning percentage, after winning 43% of their first 65 games they deserve to win the division.

The Canes have 17 games left. Ten of those are against the SE Division. The final 8 are against the SE. A lot of "four point games" there.

I like the fact that the other SE teams are catching up to the Canes in number of games played. Right now, if every SE Division team won all of their "games in hand" on the Canes, the Canes would still win the SE.

Default Mods, clean up on aisle 3

I think this thread should be locked until there are 10 games left in the season.

It's interesting that someone would click on a thread that they knew that they wouldn't want to read in the first place. If you don't want to hear about a magic number until there's 10 games left in a season, then wait until March 13 to read this thread.

It's really that simple...
